At least one person died and 36 are missing after a wooden boat, overloaded with 97 Indonesian illegal immigrants, sank off the western coast of Malaysia, local officials reported today.
The ship sank two nautical miles off the coast of Kuala Langat district, in the state of Selangor, on the Straits of Malacca, when immigrants were en route to Aceh, at the northern end of the island cano of Sumatra, after work in Malaysia.
"A wooden boat with 97 Indonesians on board sank when she arrived at Port Klang, near Banting," said Mohamad Zuhri, spokesman for the Office of the Maritime Police of Malaysia.
Rescuers Malaysia through the region to find more survivors with the support of a helicopter, a ship and four small boats. Several fishing boats are also involved in the operation.
